Ongoing Projects

COST Action - CA15226 Climate-Smart Forestry in Mountain Regions (CLIMO)

CLIMO aims to translate the "Climate Smart Agriculture" concept for a "Climate-Smart Forestry" (CSF). Three main pillars will be considered: improve livelihood of mountain inhabitants by sustainably increasing forest Ecosystem Services (ES); enhance the adaptation and resilience to Climate Change (CC) of mountain forests; optimize the CC mitigation potential of mountain forests, focusing on the most efficient and cost-effective mitigation options and capitalizing on adaptation/mitigation synergies. The main objectives are to define CSF in the European context, identify key silvicultural characteristics and harmonize CSF in mountain areas to create a common knowledge at European level. The “smartness” will be defined on the basis of measurable criteria. Moreover, experimental forest sites with available data will be identified to build a European Smart Forest Network.

Past Projects

AnaEE (Infrastructure for Analysis and Experimentation on Ecosystems)

AnaEE is a research infrastructure for experimental manipulation of managed and unmanaged terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It will strongly support scientists in their analysis, assessment and forecasting of the impact of climate and other global changes on the services that ecosystems provide to society. AnaEE will support European scientists and policymakers to develop solutions to the challenges of food security and environmental sustainability, with the aim of stimulating the growth of a vibrant bioeconomy. AnaEE will accomplish this mission by building permanent and substantial links among researchers, science managers, policy makers, public and private sector innovators, and citizens.

ARANGE

ARANGE (Advanced multifunctional management of European mountain forests) is a Collaborative Project within FP7 (Theme KBB.2011.1.2-07) with the aim to provide improved insight in the multifunctional management of European mountain forests.

COST Action - ES1203 Enhancing the resilience capacity of SENSitive mountain FORest ecosystems under environmental change (SENSFOR)

This Action aims at integrating scientific methods and results related to the biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources under climate and land use change. The Action will investigate the drivers and extent of contemporary and future environmental changes in European mountain forests, developing methods for estimating their resilience and define consequences for society. SENSFOR network will contribute to the development of strategies for preserving ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation in sensitive mountain areas in Europe.

COST Action - FP1106 Studying Tree Responses to extreme Events: a SynthesiS (STReESS)

This Action is based on the enormous potential of dendro-sciences (including Dendrochronology, Wood anatomy and Ecophysiology) to study effects of extreme events such as drought, heat waves, late frost and flooding on tree performance and wood formation.

FORESTERRA

The FORESTERRA International Project "Enhancing FOrest RESearch in the MediTERRAnean through improved coordination and integration" aims to reinforce the scientific coordination and integration of Mediterranean forest research programmes as well as scientific cooperation with Mediterranean-area countries (including EU and non-EU member states) and with countries from other Mediterranean Climate Areas (MCA) in this case, Australia, South Africa, Chile and California.

TREES4FUTURE

Trees4Future (Designing Trees for the Future) is an Integrative European Research Infrastructure project that aims to integrate, develop and improve major forest genetics and forestry research infrastructures. It will provide the wider European forestry research community with easy and comprehensive access to currently scattered sources of information (including genetic databanks, forest modelling tools and wood technology labs) and expertise.
